I am the first woman in my hometown to be made a Chief- Chimamanda Adichie

Popular Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie says she is the first woman in her hometown to be made a chief.

The writer made this known via her Instagram page where she expressed gratitude to her people of Abba in Anambra State for their warmth and love, for their enthusiastic support.

And to Igwe L.N Ezeh who has always valued education, for giving her the title of “Odeluwa”- the one who writes for the world.

Furthermore, Chimamanda went on to say that her title makes her happy because she is the First woman in her hometown to be made a chief, and it makes her happy to know that more women will follow.

“Culture does not make people, people make culture. Cultures thrive when they best serve and reflect the people,” she added.

For Adichie, our culture must become a culture that celebrates achievements whether it comes to a man or a woman.

Again, one of the highlights for Adichie was seeing children on the Dusty road laughing and waving and shouting ‘Odeluwa!’

With this title, Chimamanda Adichie officially continues the legacy of her late father, Prof. James Adichie, who was conferred with the title- ‘Odelu ọra Abba’ meaning someone who writes for the town of Abba.
