A seven storey building under construction has collapsed on First Avenue, in the Banana Island area of Ikoyi, Lagos State. The sad event happened on Wednesday. Afterward, no fewer than seven people have been rescued from the rubble.
It was reported that immediately after the incident, emergency responders were on the scene for rescue. Also, they are still searching for a victim who was trapped underneath the debris. According to eyewitnesses, construction workers were performing their jobs. Then, the building suddenly caved in at about 4:58 p.m.
Furthermore, the building at Banana Island had been under construction for months. While some of the workers escaped with varying degrees of injuries, some unlucky ones were trapped underneath the collapsed structure. Immediately, construction workers within the premises alerted emergency agencies. There was a quick response to the rescue operations.
Simultaneously, as the rescue operation is ongoing, the emergency workers are confirming the number of people rescued in line with the registered number of people at the site. They are also confirming the involvement of the developers who are on the ground. A construction worker said the workers were on the sixth floor of the building, attempting to lay the seventh floor, when tragedy struck.
There were two other buildings at the site of the collapse, but they are still intact. However, an integrity test would be conducted on the buildings to prevent another collapse.The general manager of the Lagos State Fire Service, Margaret Adeseye, said search-and-rescue operations are still ongoing until ground zero is reached. Also, an investigation has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the collapse.
Equally important, the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development posted on its verified Facebook page. It said no approval was given for the construction of the collapsed structure at Banana Island.
