Brazil lights up in honour of Pele

 

Brazil has woken up to its first day without the football legend, Pelé.

 

Pele who was popularly considered the greatest footballer of the time died at the age of 82 and had won three world cups before his death

His nation, Brazil had lit up images in honor of the late footballer.
Pele’s face shone on buildings across the South American nation and landmarks.

His fans were not left out as he the worships legendary number 10 shirt.

Also, the government of Brazil has declared a three days national mourning.

The last time Brazil declared such national mourning was when Queen Elizabeth II died.

The front pages of papers in Brazil were all talking about Pelé on Friday.

One read “Pelé died, if indeed Pelé can die”, because, for Brazilians, he is their eternal King.

Pele’s supporters had started to gather outside Sao Paulo’s Albert Einstein hospital when they heard the news of his death.

Though many see his death as a relief from the cancerous pain he has been going through, the legendary sportsman will be greatly missed.

Funeral Information

•Pelé’s wake will be held on Monday at the Santos Football club – for many years, his home stadium.

•Then his coffin will be carried through the streets of the coastal city of Santos, before a private burial the following day.

Pele’s death will also affect the swearing-in ceremony of Luiz Lula da Silva whose swearing should take place this Sunday.

Instead, Brazilians will be paying tribute to a ma who represented his nation and beyond in the game of football.

Pelé scored a world record of 1,281 goals in 1,363 appearances during a 21-year career, including 77 goals in 92 matches for his country.

He is the only player to win the World Cup three times, lifting the trophy in 1958, 1962, and 1970, Pelé was named Fifa’s Player of the Century in 2000.
