China’s Xi becomes President for a third term

The Chinese president, Xi Jinping, was chosen for a third term as President on Friday. This break in history establishes Xi as the country’s most powerful leader in generations. This appointment comes after he was granted another five years as head of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in October.

On Friday, delegates handed Xi a third term as president and re-appointed him head of the country’s Central Military Commission in a unanimous vote. This ceremony was held at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, a cavernous state building at Tiananmen Square. What’s more, the hall was adorned with crimson carpets and banners for the landmark vote. Lastly, a military band was present providing background music.

First, a digital monitor kept on the edge of the stage declared the final count. Next, Xi was declared the winner, with all 2,952 votes in favour of giving him another term in office. Xi held up his right fist and placed his left hand on a red, leather-bound copy of China’s constitution. Then, in an oath swearing streamed live on state television, he vowed to build a prosperous, strong, democratic, harmonious, and great modern socialist country. Finally, after the announcements, delegates declared allegiance to the Chinese constitution.

Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin, has extended congratulations to China. Putin’s letter to Xi read, “Russia highly values your personal contribution toward the strengthening of ties and strategic cooperation between our nations.” Equally important, this third term sets Xi up to become communist China’s longest-serving president.
