Nigerian Senator, Peter Nwaoboshi jailed over ₦805 Million money laundering

Nigerian Senator, Peter Nwaoboshi, the Senator representing Delta North Constituency has finally landed in jail over money laundering.

The aforementioned Senator was reported by The Punch to be on the run months after the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division convicted and sentenced him to seven years imprisonment for money laundering.

Moreover, Peter Nwaoboshi was intercepted by officials of the EFCC at a Hospital in Lagos on Monday, February 6, and was remanded in Ikoyi Custodial Centre on Wednesday, February 8, 2022, to begin his prison term as disclosed in a statement by EFCC.

Furthermore, Peter Nwaoboshi had been sentenced to prison on 1 July 2022 after it convicted him of a two-count of money laundering and also ordered that his two companies- Golden Touch Construction Project Ltd and Suing Electrical Ltd be closed.

The punishments were in line with the Provision Act 2021, and their properties were forfeited to the Federal Government.

However, the Senator was not present in court at the time of the Court ruling and had gone underground whilst avoiding presenting himself to the Nigerian Correctional Service.

Instead, the lawmaker proceeded to the Supreme Court where he prayed to the apex court to not only set aside the judgment of the appeal court but grant him bail, pending the determination of his appeal.

However, the apex Court ruled out the decision on 27 January 2023 as led by Justice Emmanuel Again, and wondered why Peter Nwaoboshi has refused to submit himself to the law and rather seek the indulgence of the law.

The Court of Appeal judgment that convicted Nwaoboshi followed an appeal by the EFCC against the judgment of Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of a Federal High Court in Lagos, which had on June 18, 2021, discharged and acquitted the lawmaker and his companies.

What one of the counts read

One of the count charges against Peter Nwaoboshi read that Nwaoboshi and his companies illegally acquired a property named Guinea House, Marine Road, in Apapa, Lagos, for N805 million.

And part of the money paid for the property was transferred by Suiming Electrical Ltd on behalf of Nwaoboshi and Golden Touch Construction Project Ltd. The funds are believed to be proceeds of the illicit activities of the convict.
