The United States President, Joe Biden, ordered local aid to Mississippi. This is to support recovery efforts in areas affected by the tornado. The White House released this news on Sunday. The federal funding provided will cover temporary housing. Further, it will include home repairs and low-cost loans. Also, the loans will aid in covering uninsured property losses.
At least 23 people were killed in a tornado that swept across the southern U.S. state of Mississippi. Additionally, the tornado succeeded in tearing off roofs, smashing cars, and flattening neighborhoods.
The state’s emergency services said at least four people were missing. Even so, dozens were injured, and thousands of people in Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee were without power.
Furthermore, the powerful storm that generated the tornado came with thunderstorms and rain. So, it cut a path across the state on Friday, leaving many towns devastated in its aftermath. Television footage showing the town of Rolling Fork showed an entire row of houses and buildings demolished. Meanwhile, cars were upturned and fences were ripped up.
“My city is gone,” Rolling Fork Mayor Eldridge Walker told CNN. “Devastation—as I look from left to right, that’s all I see.”
Equally important, search and rescue operations were also underway in Sharkey and Humphreys counties. This is about 70 miles (110 kilometers) north of the state capital, Jackson. The latest death toll is 23, but officials cautioned that it could rise.
