Global Terrorism Index ranks Nigeria as the 8th most terrorized country globally

 

Global Terrorism Index has ranked Nigeria as the right most terrorized country globally in 2022. The ranking cause Nigeria to drop from being the sixth most terrorized country in 2021.

According to the 2023 Global Terrorism Index report released recently, terrorist activities in the country had fallen to its lowest since 2011.

Furthermore, statistics shows that between 2017 and 2020, Nigeria ranked fourth most terrorised in the world and in 2016 and 2015, it ranked second.

The insurgency of Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province has led to the death of thousands of Nigerians in the northeast region since 2009, but the groups were more restrained in 2022.

Deaths linked to terrorism in Nigeria dropped from 497 in 2021 to 385 in 2022.

The number of terrorist attacks also dropped from 214 in 2021 to 120, the lowest recorded since 2011.

Global Terrorism Index ranks IPOB as the 10th deadliest terrorism group

Subsequently, The Global Terrorism Index (GTI) has ranked Biafran group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as the 10th deadliest terror groups in the world in 2022.

The statistics said IPOB was responsible for 57 deaths in the year 2022, from 40 attacks with 16 persons injured.

In the Global Terrorism Index published by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), “an independent and Non-Profit Think Tank, IPOB is said to be very dangerous.”

The Islamic state topped the ranking with 1,045 deaths and 410 attacks.

 

What is the Global Terrorism Index?

The Global Terrorism Index measures the direct and indirect impact of terrorism and its effects on lives lost, injuries, property damage and the psychological aftereffects.

It is a composite score that ranks countries according to the impact of terrorism from 0 (no impact) to 10 (highest impact).
