Italy’s most wanted boss, Matteo Messina arrested in Sicily

Italy’s most wanted boss, Matteo Messina has been arrested in Sicily after thirty years of being on the run. He is allegedly the boss of Sicily’s notorious Cosa Nostra mafia.

Matteo Messina was reportedly detained in a private clinic in the Capital of Sicily, Palermo.

The Italian media was reported to have been receiving treatment when he was arrested just before 10:00 (09:00 GMT) and taken away by the Carabinieri.

Also, Italian State TV reported that the 60-year-old was taken to a secret location immediately after the arrest.

He was tried and sentenced to life in jail in absentia over numerous murders.

Some of his charges include;

• Killing of anti-mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Pablo Borsellino which led go to be sentenced in absentia to a lifetime in 1992.

• The deadly 1993 bomb attacks in Milan, Florence, and Rome.

•In 1993 he helped organize the kidnapping of a 12-year-old boy, Giuseppe Di Matteo, in an attempt to dissuade his father from giving evidence against the mafia, prosecutors say.

The boy was held captive for two years before he was strangled and his body dissolved in acid.

Upon his arrest, Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni expressed gratitude for the arrest of the Mafia boss and deemed the operation a “great victory for the state that shows that it never gives up In the face of the Mafia.”

Furthermore, Messina Denaro was the last of three fugitive top-level Mafia bosses who had eluded capture for decades.

His arrest comes 30 years and a day after the capture of convicted “boss of bosses” Salvatore “Toto” Riina after 23 years on the run.
