The Edo state governor mourns the passing of Franca Afegbua. She was the senator who represented Bendel North Senatorial District in Old Bendel State. Franca was the first democratically elected female senator in Nigeria. She was 79 years old.

The governor described Afegbua as a pacesetter, trailblazer, and visioner. In a statement released on Monday, Obaseki said she remains an inspiration for women in Nigeria and across Africa.

Truly, Franca Afegbua was a champion. At a time when it was difficult to get into government as a female, she did it. Afegbua, 79, was a native of Okpella, a town in Etsako-east LGA of old Bendel state, now split into Edo and Delta states. She was elected in October 1983, under the National Party of Nigeria, in Nigeria’s second republic.

However, she didn’t serve for long, as the military coup of 1983 cut her political journey short. Nonetheless, she served her country diligently.

She died on Sunday, March 12, 2023. Franca Afegbua was the perfect example of beauty and brains. Therefore, she was a trailblazer and did exploits. She was an inspiration to young girls and women in Nigeria.

Lastly, funeral details will be announced by the family.
