The Governorship and State Assembly elections which were scheduled to hold on the March 11, has been postponed. First, the election was postponed by one week and will hold on 18 March, 2023.

This was made known in a statement signed by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, INEC, Festus Okoye, on Wednesday.

Furthermore, the INEC chairman, Yakubu Mahmood, were in a closed door meeting. The meeting started by 7 p.m on Wednesday. After the meeting, Mahmood and his team reached the decision of postponement.

Again, this announcement is coming three days before the March 11 elections. The Governorship elections and all activities that pertain to them have been rescheduled.

INEC’s announcement is due to the fact that they have been unable to commence reconfiguration of the BVAS. The Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) used in the presidential elections ought to be configured before further use.

Further news, the Court of Appeal sitting earlier today in Abuja has given INEC the permission to configure the BVAS used in the presidential election. The court dismissed the petition Peter Obi and the Labour Party filed. In the court’s opinion, adhering to Peter Obi’s objections would be the wrong course.

Finally, INEC stated that the BVAS would take days to be reconfigured hence the need for the rescheduling. Campaigns for the governorship elections can continue till March 16.
